APA assembly was right to approve of same-sex civil marriages
LETTER — Posted Aug. 1, 2005
Regarding "Psychiatry group votes to support gay marriage" (Article, June 13): The American Psychiatric Assn.'s assembly approving a statement that seeks to legalize same-sex marriage makes me feel proud to be a member. The APA is providing leadership that hopefully will encourage other medical organizations to follow in their example.
Our current laws banning same-sex marriage enshrine bigotry and promote insecurity and instability among gay and lesbian partners and their children. The next time we see a child from a same-sex family in our office we should all ask ourselves if this child is less equal than another child and if this child's family deserves to be treated differently from another.
