Grassley seeks probe of doctors selling drug secrets
NEWS IN BRIEF — Posted Sept. 5, 2005
Responding to a recent newspaper investigation, Senate Finance Chair Charles Grassley (R, Iowa) in August asked the Dept. of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission to investigate allegations that physicians are selling confidential drug research details to investors seeking inside information.
Grassley cited a series of stories from the Seattle Times last month that describes cases where doctors leaked information to investors that helped them in their investment decisions. Grassley also asked both departments to advise Congress if stronger laws are needed to help prevent such action.
"Selling drug secrets violates a trust that is fundamental to the integrity of both scientific research and our financial markets," Grassley wrote in a letter calling for the agencies to investigate.
