Cell phones not tied to cancer
NEWS IN BRIEF — Posted Dec. 18, 2006
Cell phone use is not linked to increased risk for brain tumors, according to a study in the Dec. 6 Journal of the National Cancer Institute.
The fact that cell phone antennae emit electromagnetic fields that can penetrate into the brain has raised concern that head or neck tumors might result. But that is apparently not the case, said Danish researchers.
The researchers earlier had found short-term use did not result in an increase in brain tumors, salivary gland tumors, eye tumors or leukemia. This study looked at the same group -- now cell phone users for a mean of 8.5 years -- and found similar results.
