Racial disparities persist in cancer treatment, researchers find
NEWS IN BRIEF — Posted Jan. 21, 2008
A new study found that, despite efforts in the last decade to mitigate racial disparities in cancer treatment, black patients remain significantly less likely than white patients to receive therapy for various types of cancer. The study was published online Jan. 7 and will be in the Feb. 15 print edition of Cancer. The researchers evaluated data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER)-Medicare database to evaluate cancer care received by Medicare beneficiaries diagnosed with breast, colorectal, lung or prostate cancer from 1992 though 2002.
