Trial lawyer ads for liability cases on the rise
NEWS IN BRIEF — Posted Oct. 5, 2009
Television advertisements by trial lawyers soliciting medical liability lawsuits surged during the past four years, according to a September study released by the U.S. Chamber Institute for Legal Reform.
The report showed that the number of ads spiked more than tenfold from about 10,150 in 2004 to 156,000 in 2008. Spending for the TV spots rose dramatically from $3.8 million to nearly $62 million during the same period.
The institute said the marketing tactics drive excessive litigation and underscore the need for tort reform as part of national health system reform.
