College students’ health to be assessed using new database
Posted April 16, 2012
The nation’s first college health database recently was established to help gather estimates of college students’ health conditions, vaccination rates and use of health services.
The database, known as the College Health Surveillance Network, was developed by the University of Virginia’s National Social Norms Institute and the university’s department of student health. Nineteen schools, which represent more than 600,000 students, are participating in the network, James Turner, MD, executive director of student health at the University of Virginia and lead investigator for the project, said in a video (link).
In 2011, the most common reasons students received health care on campus included respiratory infections, health screens, back problems and depression.
