Medicare political ads, 1964 to present
Bush 1992: “Health Care” President George H.W. Bush used strong imagery in this ad to help describe what would happen under then-Gov. Bill Clinton’s health system reform plan. Overcrowded waiting rooms, a wailing child and a harried physician coping with an unending workload all were used to suggest that his opponent’s plan would lead to government rationing, poor health care and a strained health system. The imagery did not help Bush win re-election. Clinton beat him with a popular vote plurality with a third candidate, billionaire businessman H. Ross Perot, on the ballot. (View ad)
