American Medical News is a newspaper for physicians, published by the American Medical Association. It is the nation's best-read newspaper on professional, social, economic and policy issues in medicine. For more details, see our AMNews profile. How often does it come out? The print version of AMNews is published 48 times a year. It comes out weekly on Monday, except in months with five Mondays, when only four issues are published. Does AMNews editorial content reflect AMA policy? American Medical News is intended to serve as a credible forum for information affecting physicians and their practices. The content of articles and the opinions expressed in AMNews are not necessarily endorsed by the AMA. Is your content peer-reviewed? How do I know it's accurate? AMNews is a current-awareness news source that follows standard journalistic practices for fairness and accuracy, under the direction of the publication's section editors and editor in chief. Content is rigorously scrutinized for accuracy and consistency by both topic editors and the copy desk. Contacting AMNews - Contact formWhat is your phone number and street address?
To whom should I direct a specific inquiry? If you know your party's name, you can find the phone number and e-mail address in our Staff directory. The staff directory also lists staff responsibilities, so you may be able to locate the appropriate person that way. I would like to contact the author of an article. Staff reporters and other frequent contributors are listed in our Author directory, which gives some brief information and, if available, an e-mail link. If the author was a contributor, please send any comments to the editor of the section (Government, Profession, etc.) I want to send a Letter to the Editor. All letters for publication are subject to editing for length and clarity. If writing about a particular article, please indicate the title and issue date of the article in your letter. Your letter should be 300 words or less; due to space limitations, most published letters run shorter than that limit. Please use our Letters to the Editor form to send your letter. I have a comment or question. If this FAQ does not answer your question, please Contact us. For better service, choose the appropriate mailbox for your inquiry or remarks: "Technical" (for Web/computer issues only), "Print subscriptions" or "General." AMNews Web siteDoes the site contain everything from the print edition? The Web site presents essentially the full text of the print product, starting with January 2000. AMNews does not have electronic republication rights to certain small syndicated news copy, used in past years. Also not posted are brief summaries of AMA or JAMA press releases and other small promotional items. The Web version also has very fewer images from the print edition. Does the site contain material not found in the print edition? Yes. We include all the supplementary boxes and charts developed for an article, which may not all have run in print due to space considerations. The online version of an article also typically has a longer list of pertinent urls, with live links to sites of interest as well as to related articles. In addition, the Web version offers a larger number of "news briefs" every week, and on occasion has had entire articles not found in print. How often do you post new material? We post articles Monday morning a week prior to the printed issue date. How long is content left up? Once posted, content is not removed. Articles from previous issues and previous years remain on the site and can be looked up in the Archives or by using the Search. I went to the site and the current issue was already gone. On the issue date, the site will post content from the next issue, which print readers may already be receiving. Recent content can always be found by scrolling down any Section page (which lists all articles in that section for the most recent four issues) or by going to the Past issues which lists articles from all sections for several recent issues). There is also a "button bar" on the home page (below current listings) with quick links to the three most recent issues. Why don't you provide PDFs of your pages, as the journals do? AMNews' pages are 11x15 inches in size, unsuitable for most users' printers. Many pages in the print edition contain large ads, and often a single page has parts of more than one article. On the Web, articles (along with any supplementary tables, charts or sidebars) are presented in a single compact document, convenient for either browsing or printing. Do you check your links before posting, because I tried one and it didn't work. Every Internet address is checked more than once before print publication, and again before posting to the Web. Nonetheless, errors do sometimes occur, and addresses do change. We do try to repair or remove broken links. If you find a link that is incorrect or no longer functional, please tell our Technical staff. Do you adhere to any general standards or principles in producing your site? Yes, the AMNews site follows the Principles Governing AMA Publications Web Sites and strives to be at least HTML 4.1 compliant. Copyright and permissionsWho is the owner of record of AMNews content? All material contained within American Medical News and on its Web site or other electronic products is copyright by the American Medical Association. All rights are reserved. May I quote from one of your articles? Brief excerpts from copyrighted material are generally covered by the "fair use" doctrine, and may be quoted without explicit permission by the copyright holder. While the interpretation of "brief" varies, we take it to mean a few individual paragraphs (or less), or a short block of text. Such quoting is welcome when it is for comment, criticism, news reporting, or academic uses, especially by a medical society or for a nonprofit purpose. For more information on fair use, see the fair use section (http://www.copyright.gov/fls/fl102.html) at the U.S. Copyright Office. If you have further questions, please write to our Technical staff. Permission to republish. Please send the details of your request for permission to republish or post content from American Medical News. Be sure to state if the request is from a medical society, nonprofit organization, or article author, as this will affect the terms of permission. Please note that -- apart from "Fair Use" quoting of brief excerpts -- partial reprinting is not allowed; the article must be reprinted in its entirety to avoid content being misconstrued due to being presented out of context. The published version should state that the material is reprinted with permission from American Medical News, and give the date that the article originally ran. Reprint orders. Please see our Reprints page for details regarding purchasing reprints. What is the correct way to give attribution? Give the source as "American Medical News" and the date of publication. Print subscriptionsI would like to subscribe to the print edition. Excellent! You can subscribe, or get more information about print subscriptions, in several ways:
Don't AMA members get the print edition? The paper version of AMNews is available free to AMA members who request it. Simply make your wishes known to the AMA Unified Service Center (above). Why did the paper stop coming? It could be a variety of things. If you are an AMA member, perhaps your request card did not get sent, or went astray. There can also be an interruption in service if you have had a change in status (such as retirement), or if the AMA has not received your membership fees or subscription payment, or for other reasons, such as an address change. Print subscriptions are not handled at the editorial office. To resolve your situation, please contact the AMA Unified Service Center (above). I want to talk to somebody about a problem with the print edition. Medical questions and complaintsI have a medical question. Can you help me? At American Medical News, we focus on the business and regulatory side of medicine. Staff members are not physicians and are not able to offer medical advice or help with finding information about medical conditions or health-related concerns. You may want to try one of the other resources below:
I have a complaint about a doctor or medical facility. Complaints regarding physician behavior can be reported to medical societies and state licensing boards. Complaints about hospitals, large clinics and medical facilities should be directed to the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. For contact information see:
Authors' queries and press releasesI have an idea for an article for American Medical News. Most of our articles are staff-written, but we publish a few freelance-written pieces, as well as work from some occasional columnists. We do not publish consumer-oriented health articles, or peer-reviewed clinical articles. You can send a particular story idea to the appropriate section editor. Contact information for all members of the AMNews staff is available in the Staff directory. Did you get our press release, and are you going to use it? American Medical News receives dozens of press releases every day; we do not track them. As a rule, we do not review individual products or services, and do not generally rewrite single press releases as "filler." We do however forward press notifications of interest to the appropriate section editor, and some of this information may provide leads for broader coverage. If you have information of possible interest to us, please follow up directly with the appropriate section editor. Contact information for all members of the AMNews staff is available in the Staff directory. AdvertisingI'm interested in placing an ad in American Medical News Excellent.
