Medicare pay delay nears for noncompliant electronic claims

Physicians who send in electronic Medicare claims that don't meet federal standards for electronic transactions should be prepared for a payment delay next month. These noncompliant claims, known as legacy claims, will be treated like paper filings, which adds at least 13 days to their turnaround time. Medicare carriers have been instructed to implement this change on July 6, but it applies to noncompliant claims received on or after July 1. The standards are the result of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.
