Doctors oppose self-referral law changes regarding imaging
NEWS IN BRIEF — Posted July 5, 2004
The American Medical Association will work with state and specialty societies to oppose any federal or state attempts to repeal the in-office ancillary exception to physician self-referral laws, including the way they apply to imaging services.
Some doctors worry that unnecessary services are provided when physicians perform in-office imaging. But the majority of physicians who spoke about the issue at the AMA Annual Meeting in June said providing in-office imaging services helps them provide better care because they know the patient's full history, it prevents the patient from having to travel elsewhere for a test, and patients get results quickly.
