Use of DEA numbers should be tightened, doctors say
NEWS IN BRIEF — Posted July 5, 2004
The American Medical Association will increase its effort to clamp down on the use of physician Drug Enforcement Administration numbers. The AMA, as directed by delegates to its Annual Meeting in June, will petition the Dept. of Justice and other federal agencies for an immediate injunction or other legal remedy that would require DEA numbers to be used only for controlled substance prescriptions. Doctors are frustrated that insurance companies, pharmacies and pharmaceutical companies use DEA numbers for reasons for which they were never intended.
