Opinion
Oath of Maimonides is an apt choice for medical school graduations
LETTER — Posted March 20, 2006
Regarding "Only 1 medical school uses classic version of Hippocratic Oath" (Article, Feb. 20): I read the piece on the "watering down" of the oath with great interest.
Our graduating class (Medical College of Wisconsin, 1972) chose to read the Oath of Maimonides because it did not require to swear in the name of pagan deities, it held a strong moral code and did not have the issues regarding giving a woman a pessary, cutting for stone, etc.
I believe that many schools use the oath of this celebrated physician, rabbi and philosopher.
