Edwards announces universal care plan
NEWS IN BRIEF — Posted March 5, 2007
Former Sen. John Edwards, a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination, last month introduced his plan for universal health care coverage.
The Edwards plan would require employers to either offer health insurance or help their employees buy it, allow states to create regional purchasing pools offering an alternative to private insurance plans, and require all Americans to buy insurance once affordable options have been established.
The proposal also would expand Medicaid and the State Children's Health Insurance Program to cover children in families earning up to 250% of the federal poverty line and adults below that line.
