Be sure to check with liability insurer about possible "free" tail coverage
LETTER — Posted April 9, 2007
Regarding "Tail insurance: Who pays and when do you need it" (Column, March 5): Steven M. Harris provides a clear explanation of the ins and outs of tail coverage in his Contract Language column.
The one addition I would make is to note that physicians leaving a practice to retire completely should check if their policy provides for "free" tail coverage. There are carriers who do not charge an additional premium to furnish tail coverage to a physician who has been covered by the same carrier for an extended period (often, 10 years or more) and is retiring from the practice of medicine.
