Census Bureau reduces estimate of uninsured Americans
NEWS IN BRIEF — Posted April 9, 2007
More Americans than previously reported by the U.S. Census Bureau had health insurance, according to a release by the agency late last month. The bureau had estimated there were 46.6 million uninsured residents in 2005, but it reduced that figure by 1.8 million to 44.8 million because of corrections to the system used to calculate the Current Population Survey. Certain residents in a household were tabulated as "not covered" when they had reported having insurance.
The agency also released a new estimate for 2004: 43.5 million uninsured, 1.8 million lower than the previous estimate of 45.3 million. In August the bureau plans to release new estimates for the uninsured population for 1995 to 2003 and for 2006.
