Bill calls for tax rebates to buy health insurance
NEWS IN BRIEF — Posted April 16, 2007
Sens. Tom Coburn, MD (R, Okla.), and Richard Burr (R, N.C.) introduced a bill in late March that would provide "Medi-Choice" tax rebates worth $2,000 for individuals and $5,000 for families. They would go toward the purchase of health insurance from any company nationwide. The bill, known as the "Universal Health Care Choice and Access Act," would pay for the rebates by ending the tax deductions employers receive for health insurance spending. Money not spent by the employee could be placed tax-free into a health savings account and used months or years later for health care expenses.
