Portland, Ore., anesthesiologist David Watt, MD, PhD, has been named vice president for professional affairs of the Federation of State Medical Boards. He will promote the federation's physician competency and quality initiatives by enhancing relationships with leaders in health care and government.

Dr. Watt was appointed to the Oregon Board of Medical Examiners in 2004 and has served as its chair since January 2007. From 2005 to 2006, Dr. Watt was on the FSMB's Bylaws Committee, which is responsible for reviewing and recommending revisions to the organization's bylaws. He is a member of the board of trustees of the Oregon Medical Assn.

"He brings an unusual combination of public administrative and health care experience to this position, including state medical board leadership experience, expertise in policy development and many years of clinical experience," said FSMB president and CEO James N. Thompson, MD.
