AMA disaster medicine journal begun
NEWS IN BRIEF — Posted May 28, 2007
The American Medical Association, in conjunction with Wolters Kluwer Health, is launching Disaster Medicine and Public Health Preparedness next month.
The goal of this peer-reviewed scientific journal is to bring together numerous disciplines that could be involved in preparing for and responding to a disaster and create a scientific basis for action taken before, during and after such an event. The publication will include original research and critical analysis on applied epidemiology, health care services, clinical management and population-based triage in a disaster situation. It also will feature in-depth reviews of topics of interest to all health care professionals involved in preparedness and response.
"Effective planning and response for catastrophic events requires an integrated effort across all medical and other boundaries, and we are committed to this journal supporting these efforts and the evolving field of disaster medicine," said James J. James, MD, DrPH, MHA, editor-in-chief and director of the Association's Center for Public Health Preparedness and Disaster Response.
The AMA has several policies supporting increased education to enable physicians to respond to manmade and natural disasters and in 2003 launched the National Disaster Life Support training program.
