Iowa study identifies shortages in some specialties
NEWS IN BRIEF — Posted June 11, 2007
Over the next 10 years, Iowa is expected to see the growth rate of its physician population exceed that of the general population, with physician numbers seeing a net gain of 71 per year, according to a University of Iowa-led task force report released in May.
However, a review of practice openings revealed the state is short on psychiatrists and neurologists, followed by a more moderate need for general internists, obstetrician-gynecologists, general surgeons and cardiologists. Given long-term national projections for a physician shortage, the task force recommended the state expand those residencies and do more to recruit and retain physicians who train in the state.
