United offers pay estimator

UnitedHealthcare in September began offering a claims estimator tool on its Web site for physicians (link) to complement real-time claims adjudication it already offered.
The estimator tool is meant to be used in advance of a patient visit to verify coverage and indicate United's reimbursement for a service, spokesman Daryl Richard said. He said the estimates are nonbinding.
Neither the estimator nor the real-time claims adjudication actually speed up payment, but both can cut down on administrative time and costs, he said.
Other health plans, including Humana and some Blues plans already offer both estimation and real-time claims adjudication tools.
