Hospital bans gifts from drug and device companies
NEWS IN BRIEF — Posted Nov. 12, 2007
The University of Connecticut Medical Center in Farmington no longer will let physicians, staff and students accept gifts from pharmaceutical and medical device companies.
The policy is intended to limit industry influence on patient care and doctor education, teaching hospital officials said in an October statement. Also, sales representatives will be barred from patient treatment areas and spaces where physician education is taking place. There are exceptions, including sales reps training medical personnel on newly purchased equipment.
Stanford University School of Medicine in California, the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven, Conn., are among the teaching institutions with similar policies.
