N.J. votes down stem cell money
NEWS IN BRIEF — Posted Nov. 26, 2007
New Jersey voters rejected a $450 million bond issue aimed at funding human embryonic stem cell research. Observers said the ballot initiative, pushed by Democratic Gov. Jon Corzine, failed more because voters were concerned about the state's financial picture than because of worries about the controversial moral status of the embryos involved in the research.
California has set aside $200 million for the research and private parties have donated about $1.7 billion, said James W. Fossett, PhD, of the Alden March Bioethics Institute Federalism and Bioethics Initiative. The state and private initiatives have come in response to President Bush's 2001 directive limiting federal funding for embryonic stem cell research to a small set of existing stem cell lines.
