Ohio medical school receives $5.7 million gift
NEWS IN BRIEF — Posted Jan. 14, 2008
The estate of Gertrude Donnelly Hess, MD, one of two women to graduate in 1934 from what is now Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, announced that Dr. Hess left the medical school $5.7 million. The gift will be used to establish the Gertrude Donnelly Hess, MD, Endowed Fund for Oncology Research. Dr. Hess died in January 2006 at 101.
Dr. Hess was a self-described maverick and strong-willed pioneer who practiced 40 years as a family physician in Cleveland, the school stated. In 1999, Dr. Hess gave $1.5 million to endow a professorship in cancer research.
