Google and Microsoft could play an integral role in a national electronic health information exchange, according to remarks made by Charles Friedman, chief operating officer for the Office of the National Coordinator of Health Information Technology.

At a speech given last month at the Defense Health Care Information Technology Conference at Georgetown University, Friedman said the health network, NHIN Connect, will be connected to Microsoft's HealthVault and Google's Google Health personal health records.

The NHIN is planned to connect the electronic records of every American and would also include medical records kept by the Dept. of Defense and the Dept. of Veterans Affairs.

The ONC, which is part of the Dept. of Health and Human Services, plans to demonstrate by the end of the year how it plans to exchange information through the network.
