Medical home concept gains support
NEWS IN BRIEF — Posted May 5, 2008
Every person should have access to a medical home, according to the Assn. of American Medical Colleges' new policy on the health care delivery model.
The policy, released in March, encourages further research and evaluation of the medical home model and how to implement it.
A medical home is centered around a primary care physician who has a team of health care professionals involved in patient care.
The AAMC policy states that payment for such models should reward practitioners for prevention, care delivery and coordination. Health care professionals should be trained to implement medical homes with a team environment, and the AAMC should work with medical schools and teaching hospitals to explore how to adopt the model in academic and community settings, the policy said.
