Survey: Mich. doctor supply tightens
NEWS IN BRIEF — Posted May 5, 2008
Michigan's physician supply is showing signs of developing shortages, says an April survey by the Michigan Dept. of Community Health.
The survey found that 61% of physicians reported that their practice was full of patients or nearly full, up from 42% in 2005. But there was an increase in the number of physicians planning to retire -- 41% said they would practice medicine for one to 10 more years, up from 38% in 2005. The voluntary survey was completed by nearly all of the state's 40,000 licensed physicians.
"These findings suggest we are going to have to step up efforts to meet the increasing demand for medical care in Michigan," department Director Janet Olszewski said in a statement.
