Partnership unveils health system reform principles
NEWS IN BRIEF — Posted July 28, 2008
A coalition of more than 100 unions, consumer advocates, think tanks, political activists and other organizations on July 8 launched the Health Care for America Now campaign. The group has not endorsed a health care plan, but instead offered 11 broad principles for health reform, including the choice between public and private insurance plans, a standard benefit package that covers preventive and chronic care, equity in health coverage access, and treatment for everyone. The coalition also calls for a watchdog to ensure that health plans spread risk fairly among subscribers, and that plans do not deny coverage or increase premiums based on a person's medical history.
The group includes the American Academy of Pediatrics. "Children are an investment, and they deserve high-quality health care with comprehensive, age-appropriate benefits in a medical home," said AAP President-elect David T. Tayloe Jr., MD.
