CDC director resigns

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Julie Gerberding, MD, MPH, resigned her post effective Jan. 20. Her departure was one of several to occur in the Dept. of Health and Human Services as the Obama administration takes office.
Dr. Gerberding led the agency since July 2002, serving simultaneously as the Administrator of the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry. She also is a clinical professor of medicine at Emory University in Atlanta and associate professor of medicine at the University of California at San Francisco.
CDC Chief Operating Officer William Gimson will serve as acting director until Obama names a replacement.
