Some medicated patches missing warning about use during MRI
NEWS IN BRIEF — Posted March 23, 2009
The Food and Drug Administration issued a public health warning March 5 to alert physicians and patients that some adhesive patches that deliver medication through the skin are lacking a safety notice stating they can cause burns if worn while undergoing magnetic resonance imaging.
Until an agency review of all patches and their safety information is concluded, patients are being urged to notify their physicians if they are wearing a patch, including a nicotine patch, when a referral for an MRI is made. Physicians then can advise patients when to remove and replace the patch.
