Obama picks assistant HHS chief

President Obama on March 25 announced that Howard Koh, MD, MPH, is his nominee for assistant secretary for health in the Dept. of Health and Human Services. The assistant secretary serves as the primary adviser to the HHS chief on public health issues. The Senate must approve the nomination.
Dr. Koh is the Harvey V. Fineberg Professor of the Practice of Public Health, associate dean for public health practice and director of the division of public health practice at Harvard School of Public Health in Massachusetts. Dr. Koh also was Massachusetts Commissioner of Public Health from 1997 to 2003 and has been the principal investigator of research projects related to cancer prevention, health disparities, tobacco control, emergency preparedness and other topics.
