University of Miami, Microsoft test remote diabetes management tools
NEWS IN BRIEF — Posted July 13, 2009
Microsoft Corp. and the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine have teamed up to launch a remote monitoring system for diabetics that also will include an area of Miami.
The project, funded by the school's Dept. of Family Medicine and Community Health, will allow patients in Miami's Overton neighborhood to stay connected with their primary care physicians through electronic means. All interactions between physicians and patients will be recorded in a database that will be used to create greater patient awareness and responsibility for their chronic condition management. The study is aimed at changing the way primary care is delivered and how patients interact with physicians.
The project will use several integrated Microsoft technologies that include personal computers and bandwidth donated by the city of Miami.
