Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius on July 6 invited groups to apply for a piece of $40 million in total grants designed to increase enrollment by eligible children in Medicaid and the Children's Health Insurance Program.

State and local governments, nonprofits, faith-based groups, elementary and secondary schools, and other groups are eligible to apply for this funding. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services expects to fund 200 grants ranging from $25,000 to $1 million each.

The Children's Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act, signed by President Obama on Feb. 4, provided $100 million to increase outreach and enrollment efforts, especially those directed at children in families earning up to 200% of the federal poverty level. Millions of children are eligible for Medicaid or CHIP but are not enrolled. The $40 million constitutes the first of two rounds of grants from this allocation.

Electronically submitted applications are due Aug. 6, and those submitted by mail are due Aug. 10. HHS will award the first round of grants by Sept. 30.
