NIDA director receives award from French government
NEWS IN BRIEF — Posted Jan. 11, 2010
Nora D. Volkow, MD, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse since 2003, was awarded the International Prize by the Institut National de la Santé et de la Recherche Médicale, or INSERM, which is the French equivalent of the National Institutes of Health.
Each year, the French institute honors investigators for their contributions to basic and clinical research on public health. Dr. Volkow was selected for her work on brain imaging and addiction science, which showed that drug addiction is a disease of the brain that usurps the reward circuitry and leads to compulsive behaviors. Dr. Volkow was one of seven INSERM awardees this year.
