Research needed into GI problems of autistic children
NEWS IN BRIEF — Posted Jan. 25, 2010
Although gastrointestinal problems are commonly reported in children with autism spectrum disorders, more research is needed to create evidence-based recommendations for evaluating and managing these issues in this population, according to two articles published online Jan. 4 in Pediatrics.
The authors of the article, "Recommendations for Evaluation and Treatment of Common Gastrointestinal Problems in Children With ASDs," offered adapted pediatric guidelines for the diagnostic evaluation of gastrointestinal problems in children with autism spectrum disorders (link).
The second article, "Evaluation, Diagnosis, and Treatment of Gastrointestinal Disorders in Individuals With ASDs: A Consensus Report," urged physicians to be alert to behavioral manifestations of gastrointestinal disorders (link).
The articles followed a 2008 meeting of a multidisciplinary panel of experts in child psychiatry, developmental pediatrics and epidemiology, among other areas.
