New osteopathic medical school may open by 2012
NEWS IN BRIEF — Posted Feb. 1, 2010
Following an endorsement by the Indiana Osteopathic Assn., Marian University, a Catholic liberal arts school in Indianapolis, plans to open a college of osteopathic medicine -- perhaps as early as 2012.
The venture was made possible by an anonymous $30 million donation, the largest in the school's history. The gift will cover nearly half the cost to construct the new college. The university's board of trustees next will approve a feasibility/implementation study on construction, accreditation procedures, curriculum design and a faculty search.
"We have been encouraged by the leaders of Indiana's health care industry to consider this venture, and we have heard that call," said Marian University President Daniel J. Elsener.
Marian University's medical school will be the second in the state. There is an allopathic medical school on the Indianapolis campus of Indiana University.
