New Jersey faces doctor shortage
NEWS IN BRIEF — Posted Feb. 15, 2010
New Jersey is facing a projected shortfall of more than 2,800 physicians by 2020 -- about 1,000 primary care physicians and 1,800 specialists, according to a report released Jan. 26 by the New Jersey Council of Teaching Hospitals.
The report recommends that an organization be created to monitor the state's physician supply. It also calls for expanding efforts to recruit doctors and retain those practicing in New Jersey, and increasing state funding for medical education and residencies.
"This is not about creating a panic or scaring people," said Robert Garrett, president and CEO of Hackensack University Medical Center in New Jersey and chair of the council. "It is about being prepared for the future."
