Physicians get tips on welcoming gay, lesbian patients
NEWS IN BRIEF — Posted Feb. 22, 2010
Physicians should not discriminate against gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender patients, say the American Medical Association and other organizations. But what can doctors do to reach out to gay patients?
In February, the advocacy group Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays offered some answers on a new Web site and free 36-page guide, "Straight for Equality in Healthcare" (link).
The guide offers tips to physicians and other health care professionals on matters such as using the correct words and avoiding stereotypes. Surveys have shown that gay patients are more likely to withhold information from their doctors if they fear discrimination. PFLAG also recommends that physicians register in the Gay & Lesbian Medical Assn.'s health professionals directory (link).
