Stroke risk lower in women who walk frequently
NEWS IN BRIEF — Posted April 26, 2010
Walking regularly reduces the risk of stroke in women, according to a study published online April 6 in Stroke.
Researchers examined data on 39,315 women, age 45 and older, who enrolled in the Women's Health Study between 1992 and 1995. After an average follow-up of 11.9 years, 579 strokes occurred. Of those cases, 473 were ischemic stroke, 102 hemorrhagic and 4 were of an unknown type (link).
Researchers found that women who walked at a brisk pace were 37% less likely to have a stroke than were those who did not walk. Women who walked two or more hours a week had a 30% lower risk of stroke than did their counterparts who did not walk regularly.
