N.Y. hospitals see fall in infection rates

New York hospitals are making significant progress in preventing health care-associated infections, according to a report released in September by the state's health department.
From 2007 to 2009, the rate of central line-associated bloodstream infections fell 18%, surgical infections related to colon surgery decreased 11% and chest infections related to cardiac bypass surgery dropped 14%, according to the New York State Dept. of Health's report (link).
Meanwhile, 35 New York City hospitals participating in a quality-improvement collaborative to prevent Clostridium difficile infections reported a 20% reduction in the bug.
