Judge grants final approval to AMA, United $350 million settlement
NEWS IN BRIEF — Posted Oct. 4, 2010
A $350 million settlement between the American Medical Association and UnitedHealth Group has been granted final approval, marking the conclusion of a decade-long legal battle over United's out-of-network payments to physicians.
The two sides reached the settlement in January 2009, but the specifics of the deal have been subject to legal debate in court since then. Judge Lawrence McKenna of the Southern District Court of New York gave final approval to the settlement Sept. 20. Physician class members must file claims for their part of the $350 million settlement by Oct. 5. More information is available on the AMA website (link).
Documents related to the case are online (link).
Litigation against WellPoint, Cigna and Aetna remains pending.
