HHS seeks to improve health care work force

The Dept. of Health and Human Services is giving $130.8 million in grants to improve health professions training and draw more people to the field.
"With an aging and increasingly diverse population, we need to prepare our health professionals to meet the challenges of providing health care in the 21st century," Mary K. Wakefield, PhD, RN, administrator of HHS' Health Resources and Services Administration, said in a statement.
The grants include $42.1 million for training in family medicine, general internal medicine and pediatrics and $23.9 million for loan repayments for dentistry faculty, state oral health programs, and pre- and postdoctoral training for dental residents, faculty, practicing dentists and other trainees.
Other grants include $50.5 million for equipment, $8.3 million for loan repayments, $2.1 million to increase work force diversity and $3.8 million for programs to help patients manage chronic disease.
