Kaiser profits, membership up

Kaiser Permanente saw a rise in earnings for the third quarter of 2010. Membership also increased during the quarter.
Net income rose to $634 million from $569 million a year earlier, on operating revenue of $11.1 billion, up from $10.5 billion during the third quarter of 2009. The results include all operations except for Kaiser's for-profit Permanente Medical Group. Its results are not made public.
Kaiser has about 8.6 million members in nine states and the District of Columbia, up 59,000 from December 2009.
The organization recently applied for a 12.6% premium increase on small businesses and 8.6% increase on individual members in Hawaii, to take effect Jan. 1, 2011.
