NEWS IN BRIEF — Posted Nov. 22, 2010
The American Board of Medical Specialties on Nov. 4 announced that physicians now can be certified in emergency medical services and epilepsy.
The EMS certification will help standardize training and be administered by the American Board of Emergency Medicine. "The certification of EMS physicians will accelerate improvements in the care of the acutely ill and injured patient while being stabilized on the scene and transported to the hospital," said ABEM President Mark T. Steele, MD.
The American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology will administer epilepsy certification, which will require advanced knowledge of pathophysiology, genetics, pathology, diagnosis and treatment of seizure disorders. The certification will signify a high level of expertise and help improve epilepsy care, said ABPN President Larry R. Faulkner, MD.
