CMS establishes $200 million project to train nurses

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services will provide up to $200 million to train advanced practice registered nurses during a four-year demonstration project.
The initiative provides funds to hospitals to increase the availability of clinical training settings for nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, nurse anesthetists and nurse midwives, the federal agency announced March 21. Payments will be linked to the number of additional nurses that hospitals and partnering programs are able to train as a result of the project.
“We’re taking steps to put more advanced practice registered nurses at the forefront of our health care system,” said acting CMS Administrator Marilyn Tavenner, who is a nurse by training. “Better training and support for advanced practice registered nurses will mean higher-quality care.”
CMS will select up to five hospitals to participate in the demo, which is authorized by the health system reform law.
