Doctors expedite handicapped parking permits for patients
NEWS IN BRIEF — Posted Oct. 29, 2012
Physicians and other health professionals in Nebraska can request parking permits for patients with disabilities online, saving those patients the difficulty of submitting paperwork in person.
The new system eliminates a complicated application process, decreases fraud and reduces permit processing times, said NIC Inc., which developed the system. A temporary tag is mailed to the patient within two days. The old system took weeks.
To participate, health professionals must have a medical license and Drug Enforcement Administration credentials. There are no associated costs or fees (link).
“It’s a very innovative service in that medical professionals are utilizing a government application to assist their patients,” said Beverly Neth, director of Nebraska’s Dept. of Motor Vehicles.
Other states, such as New York and Connecticut, allow individuals to submit an application for a handicapped parking permit online or by email.
