Clinton foundation tackles health improvement
NEWS IN BRIEF — Posted Nov. 26, 2012
Former President Bill Clinton unveiled the launch of a new initiative to engage communities, businesses, individuals and national organizations to improve health care through various evidence-based and investment strategies.
“Our nation’s rising tide of preventable health problems is alarming, because it is ruining the quality and length of life for millions, and driving up health care costs in a way that can’t be sustained,” Clinton said in a statement.
The Clinton Health Matters Initiative, a new program of the William J. Clinton Foundation, will leverage expertise from private partners GE, Tenet Healthcare Corp. and Verizon to promote healthier lifestyles and address health disparities, focusing on communities with underserved populations.
Communities working with the new initiative would strive to achieve certain measurable health outcomes, such as reducing health disparities and health care costs associated with preventable diseases. To engage individuals in their health, the initiative and its partners also have devised an online platform to spearhead local wellness efforts in communities, such as by offering free exercise classes and sponsoring tobacco cessation programs.
