When young people seek career advice, medicine has long been among the top recommendations, according to the Gallup Poll News Service. From the 1950s through the 1970s it was the top career suggested to men. It was replaced briefly by a career in computers, but has regained its top position. For women, nursing topped the list early on, followed by a career in computers in the 1980s. Physician became the top career recommendation in the late 1990s.
