Americans list doctors, scientists and nurses among those in the most prestigious occupations, while they put stockbrokers, journalists and real estate agents at the bottom of that roster.
In a Harris Poll that measured public perceptions of 22 professions and occupations, doctors were perceived to have "very great" prestige by more than half of the 1,217 U.S. adults polled. Doctors finished slightly behind firemen and scientists. Since the survey started in 1977, doctors have slipped 7% on the prestige scale.
